The AI you're staging with is doing a lot of work invisibly — reading the room's geometry, the wall colour, the direction of natural light, the perspective. All of that is inferred from the source photo. If the photo is bad, the staged result will be bad no matter how good the model is. This guide is the shortest path to source photos that consistently stage well.
Why source photo quality matters
Three things determine whether the staging looks plausible:
- The walls and floor reading correctly. If the perspective is leaning or the floor is partially blown out, the AI has to guess at the geometry. Guesses look like guesses.
- The lighting being readable. The AI matches the staged furniture to the light in the original photo. If light direction is ambiguous or the white balance is way off, the furniture will look like it was pasted in.
- Enough of the room in frame. Tight crops leave the AI without context — where does the wall end, is there a window, what's the ceiling doing. Loose-enough framing gives the model room to make sensible choices.

Lighting
Shoot during daylight hours, ideally when the room is brightest. Early morning and late afternoon are usually best — the sun is lower, light is softer, contrast is gentler. Avoid midday in rooms with skylights or large south-facing windows; the highlights blow out and the corners go dark.
What to do with that light depends on what you're shooting with.
If you're shooting on a phone
Use natural light and nothing else. Open every curtain and blind, turn off every lamp. Mixed lighting (warm tungsten plus cool daylight) confuses both the camera's white balance and the staging model. Pick one source.
Skip the flash. A single bare flash fired from the camera position flattens depth, kills the shadows the model reads light direction from, and produces a look no staged furniture can match.
If you're a photographer
Flambient works well. A bounced-flash frame blended with an ambient frame gives you clean colour, quiet noise, and controlled windows, and it stages beautifully. The flash layer also neutralises mixed-lighting colour casts, which helps the model's white-balance read. Two staging-specific caveats:
- Keep a readable light direction in the blend. The staging model matches furniture shading to the light in your photo. If the flash layer dominates so much the room reads shadowless, the furniture has nothing to match and looks pasted in. Bias the blend toward ambient and let the window side of the room stay visibly brighter.
- Watch for hard flash shadows and double shadows. Shadows cast by bounce flash at furniture height, or by a doorway between you and the flash, can read as architecture to the model. Bounce off the ceiling behind you and check corners before you move on.
Window pulls are fine. Just keep the view believable relative to the room's brightness; an interior that is darker than a perfectly exposed exterior reads as dusk, and the staging will inherit that mood.
Natural-light and HDR brackets stage well too. If your ambient-only workflow already produces clean, evenly exposed interiors, there's no need to change it. Avoid heavy-handed HDR tone mapping though; halos around window frames and flattened shadows give the model the same nothing-to-match problem as an over-flashed blend.
Composition and angle
Two things matter most: where you stand, and how high the camera is.
Corner shot, not flat wall. Stand in one corner of the room, point the camera into the opposite corner. You'll capture two walls, the ceiling line, the floor. The staging model needs to see at least two walls meeting to read the room's geometry correctly. A photo of a single flat wall gives the AI nothing to work with.
Camera at chest height — about 4–5 feet up. Not eye level (too high — distorts the ceiling), not floor level (too low — distorts everything). Chest height is what most listing photography uses because it reads as a natural human point of view and keeps verticals close to vertical.
Leave headroom and footroom. Frame so there's about 10–15% of empty ceiling above the top wall edge and a clear band of floor along the bottom. The AI uses both to anchor furniture placement — a sofa needs floor to sit on.
Avoiding distortion
Phones and ultra-wide lenses produce barrel distortion (lines bowing outward at the edges) and exaggerated perspective. A 16mm full-frame equivalent will make a room look twice as big as it is, but the floor curves visibly and the walls lean.
Aim for a 24–35mm full-frame equivalent. On most phones that's the 1× main lens, not the 0.5× ultrawide. The result is a slightly tighter shot but with much more believable proportions — and the staging that comes back will sit correctly on the floor.
What to remove before shooting
A room that's "empty" for staging purposes still usually has a few items left. Three rules:
- Remove anything that touches the floor. Boxes, cleaning equipment, packing tape on the carpet. The AI considers the floor the placement zone for new furniture, and items left on it confuse the layout.
- Leave architectural fixtures. Built-in shelving, radiators, fireplaces, baseboards, light switches, outlets — the AI preserves all of these. Don't try to clean them out.
- Don't worry about wall marks and minor scuffs. The model is reasonably robust to small imperfections. A picture-hook nail left in the wall won't ruin the result.
If there's a curtain rod with curtains still up, you have a choice: leave them (the AI keeps them) or remove them (the AI sees a bare window and stages with that assumption). Either works; just be deliberate.
Shooting procedure
Open every curtain and blind, turn off every lamp
Establish a single light source so the staging model has one clean direction to match against. No on-camera flash, no overhead lights, no lamps. (Photographers: see "If you're a photographer" in the Lighting section.)
Stand in one corner of the room
Point the camera toward the opposite corner so two walls meet in your frame. This gives the AI the geometry it needs to place furniture correctly.
Hold the camera at chest height, perfectly level
Use your phone's horizon guide. If your camera has a grid overlay, line the floor up with the bottom third gridline.
Use the 1× lens, not the ultrawide
Avoid the 0.5× lens on phones — the distortion will follow through into the staged image.
Frame with headroom and footroom
Leave roughly 10–15% empty ceiling at the top of the frame and a clear band of floor along the bottom. The AI uses both as placement anchors.
Shoot, then review on a larger screen
What looks fine on a phone screen can be visibly tilted or blurry on a laptop. Don't upload until you've reviewed at full size.
File format and resolution
JPEG or PNG, up to 10 MB. Don't bother sending RAW — the staging pipeline doesn't use the extra latitude, and the file will just be slower to upload.
Aim for around 3000 px on the long edge. Smaller than that and detail starts to suffer; larger and the upload takes longer with no visible benefit in the staged output. Most modern phone photos are already in this range.
Keep the original. Once you've staged a photo, you'll often want to come back and try a different style or density — and that always works better from the original source than from a staged copy.
Wrap up
The staging model isn't magic — it's leveraging everything you give it. Spending the extra two minutes on the source shot pays back across every staged version you generate, every revision you try, and every listing the photo ends up in. Once you have a shooting habit dialled in, almost every photo stages well on the first try.
