Resolution is the quiet thing that trips people up. The same listing photo has to work in three very different places, and each one wants something different from it: a thumbnail in a search feed, a full-screen image on the MLS, and a sharp print on a feature sheet or brochure. Get it wrong in the small direction and your photo looks soft on a big screen or pixelated on paper. This guide is the short version of what resolution you actually need, and what to do when a photo comes back too small.
The quick answer
Resolution is measured in pixels, and the number that matters is the long edge (the longer of the width and height). Here is what each use case needs.

If you want a single number to remember, it is 3000 px on the long edge. A photo at that size covers the MLS, prints cleanly at the sizes agents actually use, and leaves room to crop. Smaller than that and you start making trade-offs; larger and the file just gets heavier with no visible payoff on most listings.
Why print needs so much more than the web
A screen shows roughly 72 to 110 pixels per inch, and it is backlit and viewed at arm's length, so it hides a lot. Print is unforgiving. The standard for a crisp print is around 300 pixels per inch, which means an 8 by 10 inch photo on a flyer wants about 2400 by 3000 pixels. That is why a photo that looks perfect on Zillow can look mushy the moment it is printed on a brochure: the screen was flattering it.
This is also where the DPI confusion comes from. DPI (dots per inch) only describes how pixels are spread across a printed size. It does nothing on a screen. When you are exporting for the web or MLS, ignore DPI and think in pixels. When you are printing, the pixels you have divided by 300 tell you how big you can print before it goes soft.
Why AI-staged photos often come out too small
Here is the catch that catches a lot of agents. Most AI staging tools generate at web resolution, often somewhere between 1024 and 1536 pixels on the long edge. That is a deliberate choice: it is fast, it is cheap to run, and it looks great on a screen, which is where most listings live. It is also short of what you need for print, and short of what the stricter MLSs want.
So the staged photo that looked flawless on your laptop can be the one that disappoints on a printed feature sheet. It is not a quality problem with the staging itself, it is a resolution ceiling on the output.
How to get to print resolution
Two things get you there.
Start from a good source. Upscaling can sharpen and enlarge, but it cannot invent detail that was never captured. The higher-resolution your original photo, the better everything downstream looks, so shoot at full resolution and keep the originals.
